Ad: “Kanaway Tillicum Tikke Kloosh Muk-a-muk”

Here’s another advertisement in (Northern) Chinook Jargon.

They’re almost always in the Northern dialect. There are solid reasons for that.

This was published on the back cover of the dictionary “Chinook Jargon As Spoken By The Indians Of The Pacific Coast” by Reverend Charles Montgomery Tate (R. Thos. Cusack, Victoria BC, 1914).

Nice publicity strategy: anyone holding that dictionary in their hands could understand the Jargon sentences in it.

Since you are probably not holding that book right now, here’s some help:

  • KANAWAY TILLICUM TIKKE KLOOSH MUK-A-MUK
(Kanawei tilihum tikki tloosh mukmuk /
    kánawi tílixam tíki ɬúsh mə́kʰmək)
    ‘Everybody wants good food.’
  • KANAWAY NESIKA IKTAS WAKE HYAS MAKOOK.
    (Kanawei nesaika iktas weik-haiyas-makook /
    kánawi nsayka íktas wík-hayas-mákuk.)
‘All of our items are reasonably priced.’

𛰅𛱁‌𛰃𛱂 𛰙𛱁𛱆‌𛰅𛱁 𛰃𛱄𛰙‌𛰃𛱄𛰙? qʰáta mayka tə́mtəm?
kata maika tumtum? Qu’en penses-tu?
What do you think?
And can you say it in Chinuk Wawa?
