My CW vacation photos, part 1
I was lucky enough to be invited to Whidbey Island, Washington for a summer vacation trip last month, and I took a few Chinuk Wawa-related tourist photos…
Here’s the first one:
It’s from the excellent Island County Historical Museum in Coupeville, WA.
Here you see the historic original cross put up by Salish people for the first missionary on Whidbey Island, Father Blanchet, who came in 1840 to teach Christianity with Chinuk Wawa and the sáx̣ali-stík (Catholic Ladder).
More to come!
Great! I lived on Whidbey Island as a kid. There’s still a ton of CJ there, including “Cultus Bay”, and some ones that might or might not be CJ, like “Callahan’s Firehouse”.

Yup, it’s on e of those historic places where it’s easy to run into Chinook in random spots!
