1902: The Tillicum Hiyu Wawa Club of Aberdeen

Another of the many social clubs in the post-frontier Pacific Northwest that took Chinuk Wawa names…
The Tillicum Hiyu Wawa (‘People who talk a lot’) Club, of Kurt Cobain’s hometown, had a name that locals didn’t need translated for them:
— from the Aberdeen (WA) Herald of August 21, 1902, page 6, column 1
I purposely included the note about Civil War veteran and uncle of Alice B. Toklas, J.W. Toklas — did you know that she, and therefore the word “toke”, were from Washington? I’d like to think Alice babbled (hiyu wawa) in Chinook when stoned 🙂
