The Great Potlatch Era

A tiny history lesson:

“The Great Potlatch Era” was a time of enormous BC government giveaways of Crown (national government) lands to businesses.

This period began with the provincial premiership (1883-1887) of William Smithe, and lasted through several following administrations.

It led to a development boom, making British Columbia the sort of economic powerhouse it is today.

And it’s a neat example of the many and varied ways in which Chinook Jargon left its stamp on history; potlatch, famously, is the ;ate=to-post-frontier regional English word from CJ for ‘give; a giveaway celebration; a gift’.
