A mis-filed archival item about “Kamloops Wawa”
At the National Centre for Truth & Reconciliation’s online archive of historical documents, I notice that a document relating to the Chinook Jargon newspaper Kamloops Wawa is misfiled.
It’s got a call number “HPK 5305 .4532 13”. The dateline is Mission St Joseph in Williams Lake, BC, on November 25, 1894.
It seems to me the archivists mistook it for a letter from Father JMR Le Jeune, the publisher of Kamloops Wawa in Kamloops. But it’s a letter to him, from Father JA Bédard.
This is a link to the letter I’m talking about. It’s in French with misspellings, Latin, and Chinook Jargon. HIRE A LINGUIST (that’s me).
𛰅𛱁𛰃𛱂 𛰙𛱁𛱆𛰅𛱁 𛰃𛱄𛰙𛰃𛱄𛰙? qʰáta mayka tə́mtəm?
kata maika tumtum? Qu’en penses-tu?
What do you think?
And can you say it in Chinuk Wawa?
