Fraser River oolahans, a hyas closh muck-a-muck

The most BC sentence ever 🙂 And it’s real early in the province’s history:

oolahans hyas closh muck a muck 1

The Fraser river is said to be swarming with oolahans, a species of fish in great favor with the natives, as hyas closh muck-a-muck.

— from the Barkerville (BC) Cariboo Sentinel of May 23, 1867, page 3, column 2

Translated for outsiders, since the editor knew his readers already got it: “eulachons (candlefish)…as very good food.”

What do you think?
