1917-1921, BC: CUMTUX Non-Intoxicating Drink!

What did this taste like?

And what did it feel like to drink CUMTUX (“knowing”), the “non-intoxicating drink”?

Made by the Silver Spring Brewery Ltd, Victoria, BC, Cumtux was “healthful, refreshing, invigorating” and the instructions were to “store in a very cool place”.

So I’d guess it was kombucha 🙂

I’m guessing locals in the post-frontier Prohibition era understood it was “near beer”, with too low an alcohol content to go afoul of the laws of the time.

Funny how near beer has made a comeback. Lately I can find several brands of it in the local grocery stores.

And can you say it in Chinuk Wawa?
