New: A biography of Edward Curtis

National Public Radio ran an interview this morning with Timothy Egan, the author of a new biography of Edward Curtis.  It was fascinating, and it’s worth a listen.

The book is titled Short Nights of the Shadow Catcher: the Epic Life and Immortal Photographs of Edward Curtis.

Curtis  was the Seattle photographer who took many of the most famous images of American Indians.  These were collected in the monumental publication, The North American Indian.

He also created the landmark 1914 motion picture, In the Land of the Head Hunters.
