What kind of ‘ball’ is Central and Southern Dialect lapal?

It’s Pb, that is the chemical element lead, as in the shot pellets (balls) used in guns.
That’s what the French source word meant and means — la balle also serves for ‘bullet’.
Lapal is not a kid’s plaything.
That would have been expressed by French le ballon (giving an expected, but never found, Chinuk Wawa word ~libalo), or the Michif-favored la pelote (which would give an expected CW ~laplot).
That latter word did get loaned into a couple of interior BC Salish languages, Secwepemctsín and St’át’imcets. But not into known Chinook Jargon.
