Discovered misfiled in an archive: Previously unknown Father Le Jeune writings
Filed at the Washington State Library as the work of Bishop Paul Durieu (British Columbia) are two extensive documents in French.
Several years ago the WSL was in communication with me about these acquisitions.
Several years later 😁 I had learned enough to properly evaluate them, and to correct the record.
Here’s a sample of each of the documents I’m talking about:
“De la perfection chrétienne”, 1874:
And in French shorthand, a notice nécrologique (obituary) of the Oblate brother Albert Marie Camper in France:
In all cases, the handwriting is identifiable as that of Kamloops Wawa‘s famous Father Le Jeune.
Le Jeune’s writings in the WSL collection date back to his student days, before he came to British Columbia. So there’s no Chinook Jargon in them. But they’re of real interest and use to us for learning about the stages in his career.
Many thanks to the hardworking archivists of the Washington State Library for making these items available!
