1928: Edward Harper Thomas on CJ dictionaries

I’m not the biggest fan of his Chinook Jargon dictionary, although it was the first one that I ever got hold of…

And it was used in many people’s original research, with elders of Grand Ronde and of Lower Nicola, for example.

But it’s clear Edward Harper Thomas did some serious background work.

You can tell this when you click to read his short article “Chinook Dictionaries” in the journal American Speech 3(3):182-185 (February 1928).

There are some notions in it that I see as now debunked, but it’s very fine scholarship for 100 years ago.
