I need to go find this in Rome…!

A unique couple of items in “Chinook Writing” are spoken of in Kamloops Wawa #158 (November 1897), page 166:

‘To Pope Leo XIII. Around the same’

‘time, our Natives wanted to send a memento to our’

‘holy father the pope. This was a copy of our new’

‘prayer book in 11 languages printed on white parchment, like’

‘all of the books in the Vatican library. The Natives’

‘each gave a penny (so 5 centimes) to cover’

‘the costs of printing the book and binding this copy,’

‘and they sent at the same time a list of their names,’

‘those of their wives, and their children’s. This’

‘list contains no less than 500 names. The book,’

‘along with the list of Natives’ names, was shipped’

‘around the 25th of June.’
