Cortes Island Museum website re: “chuck”
Cortes Island Museum & Archives is a fine website for some research, if you’re not lucky enough to go there!
(Indirect thanks to Father Leo Barker for this find.)
I’m making these images tiny so you’ll click over to their actual website!
Here I’m featuring a couple of Chinuk Wawa-related items in their collections.
Here’s a reference to “the skookum chuck” — is this one of the powerful tidal rapids so well known in British Columbia’s Inside Passage?

“The “Nancy Anne” at the Bold Point wharf, where the skookum chuck trip begins”
And an image, if you needed one, of “the salt chuck” — i.e. the ocean:

Freight boat, likely Northland Navigation “Gulf Wing”, coming in to Manson’s Landing. Inscription on the back reads: “Looking out on salt chuck from front porch of cabin – boat coming in with supplys. This boat comes in once a week from Vancouver.”
