The notorious Mrs. Laura Belle Downey-Bartlett performed some of her atrocious Chinook Jargon translations of popular Settler songs for her buddies…

Naturally, this was at one of the many annual celebrations of “the pioneers” where you were most likely to hear Chinuk Wawa in the post-frontier period.

BE OBSERVED SATURDAY

Pioneers To Gather At Cham-
poeg For the Annual
Celebration

The 72nd anniversary of Founders’
day, and the 15th celebration of the
same, will be observed at Champoeg
next Saturday, May 1, under the au-
spices of the members of the Oregon
Pioneer asscciation and the Oregon His-
torical society, ex-president of the Ore-
gon Pioneer association, will preside.

Governor James Withycombe will de-
liver a short address, to be followed
with five-minute reminiscences by
pioneers.

The veteran quartet — Messrs. W. N.
Morse, Z. M. Parvin, J. E. Hall and A.
W. Mills — will accompany the excursion
and provide vocal music.

A number of Chinook songs will be
sung by Mrs. L. B. Bartlett, E. B. Mc-
Farland and others. The disposal of
capacious lunch baskets will be an im-
portant feature of the program.

A number of teachers from the
schools of the city are arranging to take
classes.

People going from Salem can go by
private conveyance, by boat, or by rail.
They can go on the Oregon electric to
Wilsonville and from there by boat to
Champoeg. The return will be made in
good time as it is planned to land trav-
elers in Salem about 6:30 in the even-
ing.
