I was talking to an old dude who grew up in Bella Coola, and he mentioned a couple expressions –
wik saaaaaaaayiii memaloose (excuse my orthography) – almost dead. he mentioned if you lengthened the word much more you’d probably be dead by the time you finished saying it.
sayii a’ilee – far away. I was curious about how he pronounced “ilihee” as “a’ilee” (‘ being a glottal stop) and was wondering if anyone here had heard that pronunciation before.
I appreciate the humor as a way of teaching folks about the leeeeeeengthening of streeeeeessed voooooowels in Chinook Jargon! 👌😁
