Chinook Jargon in the news: Skookumchuck String Band

Victoria, BC’s weekly “Monday Magazine” brings us our latest Chinuk Wawa in the news.

They feature the Skookumchuck String Band.

They’re a bluegrass group, who you might also hear playing covers of heavy metal songs. Neat idea.

Here’s what the magazine tells the world about the band’s name —

Skookumchuck is a Chinook jargon term that occurs only in Pacific Northwest English and translates loosely to strong or healthy water.

“We bounced around a lot of names and finally settled on something that reflected our Pacific Northwest roots,” said Andrew Kingsley, who plays guitars and provides vocals to the trio.
