BC CW speaker is finalist for new Canadian banknote design
Won Cumyow, the British Columbian court interpreter fluent in Chinook Wawa, may wind up being the face of Canada’s new $5 bill.
The new $5 bill will be similar to this new vertical $10 (image credit: RCI)
From the Radio Canada International article about this:
Won Alexander Cumyow (1861-1955) was the first known baby of Chinese parents to be born in Canada. He later became a court translator fluent in English, Hakka, Cantonese and Chinook jargon
It’s refreshing to see the list of candidates for the design; there are quite a number of inspiring Canadians on it who were neither politicians nor White.
I was wondering something the other day and figured this post is as good as any to ask:
What’s the state of non-Grand Ronde CW dialects nowadays? Does anyone actually speak non-GR CW outside an academic context?
I hope my readers will answer.
