Shortened Japanese words in Jargon?

Let’s quickly do away with a myth about Chinuk Wawa….
The following —
— from page 52 of volume 5 of Hubert Howe Bancroft’s book Native Races of the Pacific States of America: Primitive History
— taken from the following —
— from page 19 of Charles Wolcott Brooks’s article “Japanese wrecks, stranded and picked up adrift in the North Pacific Ocean, ethnologically considered, as furnishing evidence of a constant infusion of Japanese blood among the coast tribes of Northwestern Indians [microform] : read before the California Academy of Sciences, at their meeting, March 1st, 1875”
— is a bunch of horsefeathers.
The most solid connection between Japanese and Chinuk Wawa is Ranald Macdonald, although that link isn’t nearly as substantial as Eva Emery Dye’s fabrication about it!
